Coal Seam Gas

I’m the man from the frackers, hold on to your tractors
Have I got a deal for you
Just sign on the line and I’ll give you a mine
And some pocket money too

But wait there’s more once I’ve a foot in the door
I can renovate much of your land
Build roads just for me and clear all those trees
Did you plant them? Oh that’s too bad

Coal seam gas increase my assets
If you trust my lies and just comply
Coal seam gas increase my assets
Oh let me frack for coal seam gas

You better sign quick coz I’ll give you a tip
There’s some whackos and luddites could stop us
They make this big drama about Gasland and Tara
But they’re clearly quite honestly bonkers

Coz there’s nothing to fear we’re all good people here
There’s no need for any resisting
Coal seam gas, it’s greener than grass
Haven’t you heard us insisting?

Coal seam gas increase my assets
If you trust my lies and just comply
Coal seam gas increase my assets
Oh let me frack for coal seam gas

Groundwater shmoundwater who cares about that?
I really can’t see what’s the fuss
If your water goes rank just buy it in tanks
Perhaps you can buy it from us

Polluting clean air, again, who cares?
No one owns it so no one can lose it
And if you fall ill it’s not coz we drill
At least not until you can prove it

Coal seam gas increase my assets
If you trust my lies and just comply
Coal seam gas increase my assets
Oh let me frack for coal seam gas

So if you get a letter from a mining company
That asks if they can do some exploratory drilling
And promises to pay you a large amount of cash
Please watch the movie Gasland before you let them in!

Coal seam gas shove it up their assets
Take your power back, don’t let them frack
Coal seam gas shove it up their assets
Don’t let them frack for coal seam gas

This is absolutely brilliant! It tells it like it is and you have managed to capture the essence of this bloody dirty industry and the massive consequences it will have if it is allowed to take hold. Wonderful voices too!! LOVE IT!! You do Kyogle proud girls!!

    • Felice says:

      Thanks so much Leah!
And thanks for all the incredible work you and Paul, and all at GAG Kyogle, have put into this movement. The ‘little meeting’ you set up recently was the reason this song was finally recorded.

  8. Susan Gourley says:

    Fantastic tune!!!!!! x

  9. FarmBoyWilly (Will) says:

A genuine, ‘cleaner’ alternative to coal. I’m not saying its squeaky clean but in ‘reality’ there needs to be a period of transition to wind, solar etc. This provides that stepping stone while providing progress and stability for the region and the country.

Please please open your mind to the situation. (I also hope you post this and respond with rationality, I have an open mind and would welcome the debate. Should you not post it then it would be clear to me that you promote censorship and therfore have no place in political activism).

    • Sarah says:

      Hi FarmBoyWilly,

Thanks for your comment. We’re so not into censorship here, it’s really good to be able to respond to people who think differently from us, and to explain why we think CSG is a dangerous con.

But first, do you really live on a farm? Perhaps you are someone who works in the industry? Or marketing? I don’t mean to accuse you of being a plant, it’s just that every farmer I’ve spoken to about this is quite sure that CSG mining could really stuff things up. Or perhaps you’ve just been listening to the glossy expensive ads for CSG the industry has been putting on TV?

Anyway, from the song you can probably guess that we think CSG is not a “genuine, ‘cleaner’ alternative to coal”. We think CSG mining is a way for a few multinational companies to make a lot of money, while conveniently outsourcing the environmental costs to everyone else. In ‘reality’, it’s dangerous not only for farmers, but for everyone who eats food, drinks water and breathes air.

Here is some info put together by people who don’t have a vested interest in selling the idea of CSG mining to the public:

If you think CSG is clean because it results in fewer greenhouse emissions, read this

Here is some info about what fracking (or “hydraulic fracturing”) involves.

These are the substances that the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) says are used in fracking in Australia. Here is an easier-to-read extract. Don’t be misled by industry claims that they only use “salt and detergent” (neither of which you want in you drinking or agricultural water anyway), or “ingredients that you would find in your kitchen cupboard”. This list is the official version of what they can use.

Here is more on CSG and water contamination and more here.

Of course, there’s also the effect on native wildlife and plants, but for most people the biggy is that if agricultural areas become contaminated, nobody eats.

So that’s why we think what we think. But as you say, it’s important to keep an open mind, so if you have any (substantiated) facts that we don’t know about, that show that CSG mining is really a “genuine cleaner alternative”, then please post back.

      • Leah says:

A message for Will above – Cornell University study in CSG proving that it is in actual fact more polluting that coal. The facts up until now have conveniently been cherry picked, and omitting to add the added pollution and dangers of methane leaks, choosing to only talk about the end product. After all production it is far worse than coal. The beauty of it for the CSG companies is that they can obtain it for pittance from other peoples land, they simply force their way on, drill when ever where ever they want, take the gas and leave the mess. Huge profits at the misery of others, not to mention our water quality and agricultural industry.

  10. Leah says:

Hi girls great song and it will bring light to CSG mining and it’s dangers. I just noticed when doing a google search that the song is pasted to the “hot copper” Metgasco share page where aspiring megalomaniacs, happy to make their money off other people’s misery go to chat about their need for greed!! So perhaps that is where farmboywilly has come from. As you say, there are a minuscule amount of farmers who are in any way content with CSG so I doubt Willy boy has anything to do with farming, or has his own land at risk. In fact those who signed up none the wiser over the past years are bound by gag orders by the companies themselves, so are too frightened to openly speak about the destruction of their own land, that is often what happens when you fear the truth getting out, mind you a lot are now coming forward and speaking out regardless. There are also many law suits lined up for the court system against the gas companies which will start to happen shortly. The Senate enquiry in QLD who has heard from health experts over the past days have clearly stated the link between CSG and cancer, this industry is doomed, thankfully.

  11. Maureen Welsh says:

    Terrific stuff!

  12. Ian Angus says:

A wonderful song, thank you! We have posted it on Climate and Capitalism

  13. Ian says:

Brilliant! Keep up the good work,it’s going to be a long hard struggle!

  14. Penny says:

The sad thing is, farmers are being ‘wedged’, their neighbour gives in to these guys for a pittance, making his neighbours unviable and the aquifer they depended on is destroyed. And all this in a dry country. The move to renewables will now have to wait while we rush into madness and greed, at the end our children will ask how we could have been so Stupid. ?

    • Felice says:

So true Penny. Which is why we need to make as many people as possible aware of the consequences of giving in to the CSG companies. At the end of the day you can’t drink money.

  15. Twitter and blistered says:

Congrats on a …. frackin’ good song!

I’m bemused at the different responses and attitudes that seem to be taken with respect to community complaints and concerns about wind farms cf CSG by the powers that be …and some mainstream media.
For wind farms, the slightest squeaky wheel squeal about mysterious and totally unsubstantiated ‘soundwaves’ and their diverse alleged health impacts can quickly activate politicians’ knee jerk reflex to a state of spasm. Whereas when entire farming communities raise observable, significant impacts of CSG, it’s as if the poor polis are in flaccid paralysis.

Now why would that be I wonder?

ps I’m not associated with either wind farms or CSG .. or any farming for that matter although we do pay for 100% wind power generated electricity.

  16. John says:

    Great song, thanks
Congratulations it’s now the 1st CSG protest song from Australia on
nice place you’ve got there, keep the frackers out

  17. Fantastic effort!

Now added to my collection of environmental songs

That’s what social media are for!

  20. Julie says:

I’ve played the song over & over for weeks & still love it. What a great way to get a message across. I’ve just forwarded the link to my builder who I just discovered is active in CSG opposition in the Hunter Valley NSW.

  21. Cola says:

Great song! Looking forward to a day when CSG is banned across the globe! Onwards and upwards for wind, hydro and solar energy.
