A couple of months ago, we woke up one morning to find a well-nourished visitor outside our bathroom window. His/her? jaws were still a bit loose from the almighty stretching they must have been given the night before.
Carpet snakes are reasonably common around here. Local legend has it that there used to be a 20 foot long one, a foot wide, that showed itself occasionally. I suspect it may have grown in the telling (!), but I know at least one woman who was quite convincing when she told me she feared for her small children at the time.
We’ve only seen small ones, like this one (2.5m? ish?) but if they can swallow a lump this size, (about the size of a large possum or a small wallaby) then they can certainly swallow one of our chickens. So we were glad to see that it found another meal instead, at least this time around.
